How to Set Intentions for The New Year with Feng Shui

There’s something magical about the time between Christmas and New Year’s. The expectations of the holiday season are behind us, and the world feels slower and softer. It’s a time when I can truly listen to myself, free from the noise of external pressures.

For me, this period is perfect for quiet reflection and mindful preparation. It’s not about setting strict goals or creating to-do lists; it’s about looking back on the past year, recognizing what served me, and envisioning what I’d like to invite into my life for the year ahead.

Feng Shui has become an essential part of this process. By aligning the energy of my home with my intentions, I feel supported in making meaningful changes. Below, I’ll walk you through the five steps I use to create a harmonious space for reflection and intention-setting.

  1. Clear Out the Old to Make Space for the New

The first step is always decluttering. After the holidays, I take time to gently let go of items that no longer serve me. This could be decorations I didn’t love, clothes I never wore, or even outdated paperwork.

Once I’ve decluttered, I move on to my favorite ritual: cleansing my home with Palo Santo. This sacred wood is known for clearing stagnant energy and inviting in positivity. I light a palo santo stick and let the fragrant smoke swirl through each room, paying special attention to corners and spaces that feel “heavy.”

As I walk through my home, I visualize letting go of the past year’s stress or negativity and making space for new opportunities. This process feels deeply grounding and helps me prepare my environment—and my mindset—for reflection.

Tip: Open a window during this ritual to let the old energy flow out and welcome in fresh air and positive vibes.

2. Reflect Using the Bagua Map

Once the space feels cleansed, I take out my Feng Shui Bagua map. The Bagua map is a tool that divides your home into nine zones, each representing a different life area—like health, relationships, wealth, and creativity.

I sit with a journal and reflect on the past year, focusing on each life area. Which areas felt strong and fulfilling? Which ones felt stuck or challenging? This reflection helps me see where I’d like to focus my energy in the new year.

For example, last year, I noticed I was neglecting the Family & Health area of my home, and my energy felt depleted. This year, I’m prioritizing balance and vitality by adding fresh plants and earthy tones to that zone.

Tip: Place symbols or items in each zone that reflect your intentions. For the Wealth area, you might add a gold decoration, while the Career area could benefit from a vision board.

3. Set Intentions with Meaningful Decor

In Feng Shui, everything in your home holds energy, so I like to update my decor to align with my goals. This doesn’t mean redecorating entirely—just adding small touches with intention.

For example:

  • If I’m focusing on self-care, I’ll place soft, comforting blankets in the Family & Health zone.

  • If I want to spark creativity, I’ll add colorful artwork to the Creativity & Children area.

  • If strengthening relationships is a goal, I’ll add candles or paired objects to the Love & Relationships zone.

The key is to choose items that feel meaningful to you and symbolize the energy you want to cultivate.

4. Use Colors and Elements to Boost Energy

Feng Shui incorporates the five elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water—and each one represents a different type of energy. I love using these elements in my home to support my intentions.

Here’s how I might incorporate them:

  • Wood (growth and vitality): Add fresh flowers or plants.

  • Fire (passion and transformation): Use candles or red accents.

  • Earth (stability and grounding): Place crystals, ceramics, or earthy tones.

  • Metal (clarity and focus): Add metallic frames or white decor.

  • Water (reflection and flow): Incorporate mirrors or items in blue or black.

Choose colors and elements that resonate with your intentions and place them in the corresponding Bagua zone for extra support.

5. Anchor Your Intentions with Rituals

Finally, I anchor my intentions with a simple ritual. After my home is cleansed with palo santo and my zones are refreshed, I take time to set intentions with mindfulness.

One ritual I love is writing my intentions on small pieces of paper and placing them in the corresponding Bagua zones. For example, I’ll write “abundance” and place it in the Wealth area or “new inspiration” in the Creativity zone.

I also like to light a candle as I speak my intentions aloud, visualizing how I want the year ahead to feel. This practice ties together the energy of my home and the energy of my heart, making my intentions feel grounded and achievable. By taking time to reflect and align my home with my intentions, I feel supported in creating a life that feels truly aligned with my values and dreams.

If you’re looking for a gentle, meaningful way to prepare for the upcoming new year, I encourage you to try these steps. Start with a clean slate, reflect on the past year, and let your home become a partner in manifesting your dreams for the year ahead.

Here’s to a harmonious and inspired New Year!
